Our present enlightens us what we have achieved but it’s our past that reminds us the struggle behind achieving it. Thousands of years of exquisite and diverse culture made our city Bhopal a shining example of royalty and grandeur.

The first stone in the foundation of this city was laid by Dost Mohammad. However, After the demise of the 23rd nawab of the city Nawab Hamidullah, the reign of the city passed on to his Begam- Quedessia Gauhar Ara, in the absence of a male living heir in the dynasty of Nawab Hamidullah the Begam shouldered the duties and responsibility of the state. This incident laid people awestruck because never in the history of any princely state a feminine monarch has ruled.

The liberal and unprejudiced Begum built this fort in 1820 near the present day upper lake of Bhopal. The Begam adored art and architecture which is very much significant in the stunning and excellent architecture of the fort. The carvings and splendid designs are a true blend of Mughal and Hindu architecture.

Quedessia Gauhar ara had a prosperous reign and under her control, the city flourished by leaps and bounds. Initially, the mahal was surrounded by acres of gardens however in the due course of time the surrounding area passed over to the government, the modern day VIP road was constructed on the confiscated land. From the last 22 years, the face of the fort has changed completely the district administration and state tourism department holds exhibitions events and fairs related to handicraft clothes pottery and tribal artifacts.

Standing for more than 320 years the charm of this shining example of the grandeur and historical significance has vanished. The attribute of elevating administrative and political power has lost its importance amidst the smoke of modernization.
